How much had changed in a year. I was grateful because this was what I’d wanted without understanding exactly what it was. So much had happened—heroes met, songs written, a confidence that wasn’t faith, but baked in.

When midnight hit, the confetti flew, and we sang “Auld Lang Syne.” For me, it wasn’t about saying goodbye to 2002, but looking ahead to my hopes for the years to come.
